About Birmingham City University

With around 25,000 students from 80 different countries, Birmingham City University is one of the largest universities in the UK and our popularity has grown significantly in recent years. Between 2008 and 2010, Birmingham City University had the highest rise in UCAS applications of any university in the Midlands.

Situated in Birmingham, the UK’s second city, Birmingham City University is proud of our strong links and close collaboration with the region, which dates back to 1843. The University puts more than £270 million into the regional economy and supports thousands of jobs in the city and surrounding area.

Our six academic faculties offer over 350 courses, from foundation level, through undergraduate degree programmes, to taught Master’s courses and research doctorates. About a third of our students study part-time, combining employment with our professionally relevant courses, improving their career prospects.

Strong traditions

Birmingham City University’s contribution to the education of the citizens of Birmingham and beyond stretches back through a succession of predecessor institutions for over 160 years. We achieved university status in 1992 as the University of Central England, changing our name to Birmingham City University in 2007, reflecting our commitment to, and pride in, our home city. We are extremely proud of our achievements to date and excited about the possibilities for the future and the contribution we can make to our students, the economy and society.

A city for life

As an exciting, diverse city with the UK’s largest student population outside London, Birmingham is the ideal place to study. Many of our graduates find employment or set up businesses in the city which has a thriving creative industry, a large professional and financial services sector and, of course, the UK’s second-largest retail center. For more information, take a look at our Lonely Planet mini-guide ‘Birmingham: Your Life Starts Here’, available either as a booklet or a free-to-download App.

Professional University

Birmingham City University’s focus on practice-based learning provides students with access to cutting-edge facilities and real-world experience. We are committed to developing industry-ready graduates and are ranked in the UK top 30 by the Sunday Times University Guide (2012) for placing students in graduate-level jobs. The Student Academic Partners scheme, where staff and students work together as equal partners on academic projects, won the Times Higher Education Award 2010 for ‘Outstanding Support for Students’.

Birmingham City University’s courses are designed in partnership with industry to ensure our students gain the skills employers tell us they need. We are accredited by over 40 professional bodies and work closely with thousands of businesses including household names like Apple, Cartier and Rolls-Royce. Last year six out of 23 placements offered nationally by computing giant Cisco went to our students.

Contribution to research and employer engagement

Birmingham City University is also home to world-class and in some cases world-leading research that is making a difference to society in areas like mental health policy, criminal justice and planning. From one of the UK’s most high-profile criminologists to the first female President of the Royal Institute of British Architects, our academics come from and retain their links with industry, benefiting our students and the organizations we conduct research for.

Birmingham City University also aspires to lead the way on engagement with employers in all sectors through our programmes of applied research, innovation, knowledge transfer and workforce development. We work with organizations as diverse as the BBC, Cisco, Microsoft, Arts Council England, Jewson, the Law Society and the NHS.
